38 Degrees

38 Degrees is one of the UK’s largest campaigning organisations. We bring together millions of UK citizens around a set of shared values: to defend fairness, protect rights and freedoms, promote peace, preserve the planet and deepen democracy. We combine digital communications with political strategy and good old-fashioned grassroots organising.

We do mainstream, inclusive campaigning, democracy and community-building projects, events, and large scale fundraising. We’re funded by and driven by our members, and independent of political parties and big business.

We aim big, and we win more than most – there are forests you can walk in, hospitals you can get treated in, and pubs, libraries and museums you can still enjoy thanks to 38 Degrees campaigns. We’ve closed tax loopholes worth hundreds of millions of pounds, stopped cuts to welfare payments for thousands of disabled people, and enabled tens of thousands of our members to switch to cheaper, greener gas and electricity suppliers.

38 Degrees puts power into people’s hands. 38 Degrees members come from all walks of life and a wide range of opinions and perspectives. We strengthen democracy by giving 38
Degrees members new ways to get involved. We want to be more than just consumers and voters, and act as a loud and persistent knock on the door of the politicians, influencers, companies and institutions whose decisions affect us.

38 Degrees was founded in 2008 by a group of activists and funders concerned about the state of our democracy and determined to try something different. We were founded in memory of Anita Roddick, a lifetime champion of the power of ordinary people to make a difference. We launched in May 2009, and celebrated our millionth member in 2011.

In nature, 38 Degrees is the angle at which avalanches happens. 38 Degrees aims to create tipping points at which people power can make change happen.
