Inclusive Boards are delighted to work with akt in their search for new Trustees.

akt was founded by an ally Cath Johnson in 1989, at a time when LGBTQ+ people faced persistent and high levels of oppression, physical and verbal abuse and were denied the basic human rights and equity afforded to others. Cath stood up and galvanised the LGBTQ+ community of Manchester by leading the world’s first response by a charity to the many LGBTQ+ young people who faced rejection, abuse and homelessness just for being brave enough to come out to their families.

Inclusive Boards is working with akt to identify candidates who can provide expert advice to the Board and drive the organisation forward.

We particularly encourage applications from BAME and transgender identities, who are currently under-represented within akt. all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, disability or age. We are seeking applications from individuals with experience in the following areas:

  • Change Management – over the past five years akt has gone through a significant growth process and we are now looking for a person to join the board and help support and prepare the senior management team and board as the organisation continues on its journey as a national provider of services to young people. You will come from the voluntary or other sector background where you have overseen and supported your organisation through a significant growth journey involving physical and cultural change.
  • Technology – in 2016 akt launched a digital based offer to young people at risk of homelessness, comprising a range of interactive platforms from online mentoring and live chat support to a resource hub. We are now looking for a specialist to join our board of trustees who can provide guidance to our team who has either developed a digital offer to support service users within a charity / other setting or comes from a tech background where they have overseen the development of tech based engagement platforms for young people.
  • Youth or Homelessness – we are looking for a person to join our board of trustees who has specialist knowledge and demonstrable experience at a senior or board level in homelessness or young people’s services.
