Managing Director Natural Resources
An experienced senior executive across the water, energy, engineering and construction sectors, Maxine Mayhew has a successful track record delivering in challenging divisional P&L roles as well as complex functional roles (including technology, engineering, consultancy, H&S). Currently MD Natural Resources for Costain and a member of the board, she leads the water, energy and defence sectors, responsible for growth and operational performance in technology, consultancy and complex delivery services.
Maxine graduated with a First Class Honours degree from Brunel University along with a diploma in professional development. This sparked her drive to problem solve, make things work, and improve the natural environment working alongside industry to ensure relevance and deliverability. She subsequently completed a PhD in wastewater treatment at Cranfield University, developing her process engineering capability.
Maintaining a technical interest throughout her career, Maxine has led projects in waste water, anaerobic digestion and water technology development. Identifying the benefit of a novel technology in biosolids treatment, she then led the development of a full-scale application resulting in improved regulatory compliance, cost reduction and revenue generation through partnering for sale of the technology.
Recent years have focused on leadership, commercial development and strategy delivery with a number of executive roles ranging from operations, engineering and complex delivery through to central support services. Maxine has always enjoyed stretching herself to apply knowledge to new markets and has even led retail leisure, marketing and start up teams! Currently, she and her team are focused on transforming the service mix in the business, growing consultancy opportunities based on a foundation of innovative technology and process to deliver tangible solutions for clients.
Maxine is values driven and is motivated to deliver by creating and developing high performing teams. Supporting the evolution and progress of those around her has remained a key characteristic of her leadership. Maxine combines her logical engineering and science based capability with natural creativity and an innovative spirit to bring fresh thinking and approaches to all she does. Underpinning it all is a sustained focus on the natural environment.
Maxine is also a Non Executive Director with Karbon Homes (a housing association), and an independent member of Cranfield University Council. These roles enable her to give something back to 2 sectors that she has personally benefitted from over the years. She also supports the BiTC Water task force by representing the construction sector on the board. Previously a member of the Tees Valley Local Enterprise Partnership, she helped shape economic development of the region. She has also supported various innovation enterprises including being a ‘dragons den’ style panel member for the Unilever Foundry (their global collaboration platform) to search for the shower of the future to reduce water consumption.
While her home is now in Cheshire in the North West, Maxine works across the UK with teams and clients spread from Aberdeen to the South Coast as well as spending significant time at Costain headquarters in Maidenhead. At home, she enjoys a central role in the local community where along with her husband they own and run the local butchers which they saved from closure. The team of 4 butchers including two newly qualified local apprentices provide a valued service in the village and a wide variety of fresh local produce!
Her passion for the natural world is reflected in her holidays where she travels to visit and support the conservation of endangered species such as the mountain gorilla helping to educate local communities on the benefit of protection of their wildlife and habitats.
