Inclusive Boards are delighted to support the British Science Association (BSA) in their search for additional Council Members.

The BSA was founded in 1831 and incorporated by Royal Charter. Their vision is of a world where science is at the heart of culture and society and their mission is to transform the diversity and inclusivity of science; to reach under-served audiences, and to increase the number of people who are actively engaged and involved in science. They achieve this by unlocking the potential of a more diverse group of people, increasing their ability to tackle some of the world’s biggest challenges and shape our future for the better.

BSA has a Council which fulfils the role of a Board. As a charity trustee, your role is to work with other Council members to set the strategic direction and effective running of the organisation.

BSA Council members (Trustees) need strategic vision, independent judgement, and an ability to work effectively as part of a team. As one of the charity’s senior representatives, you will have leadership abilities, communication skills, experience of working in diverse contexts, an understanding of organisational change/effectiveness and personal credibility will be valuable. You should be able to demonstrate a commitment to the principles of effective governance and financial management in charities.

The Vice-President for Education is expected to be able to demonstrate any one of these skills and experiences:

  • Expertise and professional standing in an educational field;
  • Understanding of best practice in STEM school education, especially with underserved young people;
  • Understanding of social science research about education;
  • Experience & expertise in chairing meetings, and willingness to chair our Education stakeholder group;
  • Ability to champion and support our education and policy work.

In addition to the above, each Trustee should use any specific skills, knowledge or experience they have to help the Board of Trustees reach sound decisions. These may involve scrutinising Board and Committee papers, leading discussions, focusing on key issues, providing advice and guidance on new initiatives and other issues in which the Trustee has special expertise.

The posts are unremunerated voluntary positions, but reasonable expenses will be met.  For more information on the roles and their specifications, please download the trustee information pack below.
